The selection of materials for reaction vessels is based on the properties of the reactants and the operating conditions. Common materials include stainless steel, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), and special alloys. Stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, making it suitable for most chemical environments. Fiberglass-reinforced plastic is used in applications involving highly corrosive substances. Special alloys, such as Hastelloy, are suitable for extreme conditions, such as high temperatures or highly corrosive environments.

Cost is also a factor in material selection. For instance, stainless steel is relatively inexpensive, whereas special alloys are costly. The choice of material requires balancing performance against cost.
